Novel 3D Printer

I co-lead the Space Manufacturing mission at the Columbia Space Initiative. Space Manufacturing is exploring and developing new methods to enable the next generation of self-reliant off earth missions. Our goal is to reduce the frequency—and eventually—the need for resupply missions, to make life off the planet truly independent. We are particularly interested in using additive manufacturing and on planet resources to manufacture.

We designed and built a novel FDM 3D printer and machined it completely in-house. ​We are currently working on designing and building a SCARA arm printer. With a SCARA printer we are seeking to significantly increase the build volume by placing the printer on a track system.
